Lake Mead NRA/Hoover Dam (click for more info) Lake Mead is America's most diverse National Park, covering 1.5 million acres. The highlights of this area for cyclists is the River Mountain Trail and the Historic Railroad Tunnels Trail leading to Hoover Dam. McGhie's is one of only two bicycle tour companies with the permit to ride in this area.
The Historic Tunnels Trail is an easy ride along the former railroad route to Hoover Dam from Boulder City. It was used from 1931-1961 to transport materials for the construction and later maintenance of the dam. It is a graded trail of decomposed granite through five large tunnels. The total length of the ride is 7.5 miles with amazing vistas of Lake Mead and the Boulder Basin, the Hoover Dam, and the Hoover Dam bypass bridge. You may want to park your bike and head up to the overlook of the dam from the Highway 93 bridge observation area before riding your bike across Hoover Dam. Photos, snacks and a restroom stop before heading back up the hill to the starting point.
Our tours also travel approximately 15 miles of paved bike path which is the lower portion of the River Mountain Trail. Within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the trail follows Lakeshore Road with many points of interest along the route. It winds along the shore of Lake Mead past The Lake Mead Marina, Boulder Beach, Saddle Island, Pyramid Island, the now closed-Lake Mead Lodge and Fish Hatchery. After the Fish Hatchery, the trail turns west and travels under Lakeshore Drive and then up along the old road that originally ran along the lake. We ride the hills up to the north entrance of the LMNRA and then head back to the parking area at the beginning of our ride for a total distance of approximately 25 miles.
Red Rock NCA (click for more info) The Red Rock Scenic Loop is a road cyclist's dream! We start this guided road bike tour from our mountain bike rental location on the designated Scenic Byway that travels the base of the Spring Mountains. After a nice 7-mile warmup, we turn into the Red Rock Scenic Loop which is a one-way 13-mile paved road that climbs up to 4777 feet above sea level in the first 5 miles. The road takes riders along the white and red sandstone cliffs that give the area its name. Once at the top, take a photo holding your bike above your head on Victory Rock with the valley spread out below. After a drink and a snack, you weave your way through the National Conservation Area past the limestone mountains on the west side of the park. Once you are back on the Scenic Bypass, it is a six-mile downhill cruise back to the starting point in the town of Blue Diamond. Keep your eyes peeled for wild burros, jackrabbits, and roadrunners! This ride is a total of 26.2 miles with approximately 2000 feet of climbing.
Calico Basin (click for more info) For riders who wish to experience the beauty of Red Rock without the challenging climb, the ride to the Red Spring Picnic Area at Calico Basin is the perfect antidote. Instead of turning into the Scenic Loop, riders continue two miles to Calico Basin road. One mile up is the picnic area which features a large, covered public eating area. The highlight of this stop is the boardwalk that leads right up to the mountain which makes up the East side of Red Rock. On the boardwalk, you see petroglyphs, wildlife and running water that feeds the perched spring. The total distance of this ride is 22 miles with approximately 1200 feet of elevation gain.
